レッスンのポイント
仮定法には常に if 節が使われるわけではありません。反事実のニュアンスが明らかなとき、「もし～なら」を省いて「～だろうなぁ」「～だっただろうなぁ」とすることも頻繁にあります。
Today’s dialog

Todd: Hi, Kara. Can I ask you something?
Kara: Sure, if it’s not too personal. What’s up?
Todd: I’m having some trouble with my roommate.
Kara: What happened?
Todd: He says he can’t pay his rent for this month, so he’s asking me to pay the entire rent. I don’t know what to do. In my place, what would you do?
Kara: That’s a tough one. I’ve never had a roommate who didn’t pay the rent. Mmm… Maybe you can pay the rent this month, and make sure he pays you back next month.
Todd: That’s a good idea. I think I’ll try that.

現在完了経験用法。この文は関係代名詞が使われ、a roommate を、主語に空所がある who didn’t pay the rent が修飾し「家賃を払わなかったルームメイト」。

仮定法には常に if 節が伴い「もし～だったら～だろうなぁ」となるわけではありません。反事実のニュアンスを含むフレーズが使われている場合には、if 節は使われないのです。
この文に if 節はありませんが、in my place（私の立場なら）に if と同様の反事実の含みがあります。「あなたが（事実と異なり）私の立場だったら」ということです。相手が私の立場にいるわけではありませんから反事実のニュアンス。would が用いられているのもそのためです。if 節の仮定法と同様、控えめに・ホンワカ、「するでしょうかねぇ」と結んでいるのです。
この文に if 節はありませんが、in my place（私の立場なら）に if と同様の反事実の含みがあります。「あなたが（事実と異なり）私の立場だったら」ということです。相手が私の立場にいるわけではありませんから反事実のニュアンス。would が用いられているのもそのためです。if 節の仮定法と同様、控えめに・ホンワカ、「するでしょうかねぇ」と結んでいるのです。
次も同様の例。

in your shoes（君の靴を履いてみる）が「君の立場に立つと」に繋がっています。こうした反事実の含みで使われることのあるフレーズには様々なものがあります。

キーセンテンスと似た文。in your place は「君の立場なら」。am not sure（よく分からない）を wh 節で展開しましょう。

「20年前なら」という想定が置かれています。who could … は「疑問の意図のない疑問文」。「誰ができただろうか＝誰もできなかった」。
I know she likes me. Otherwise, she wouldn’t keep answering my emails.
話し手にとっての事実から離れ、「もしそうでなければ」。
