Wayne: I saw my nephew Lucas on Sunday. I couldn’t believe how tall he’s become. He’s almost as tall as his dad.

Zoe: Wow! How old is he?

Wayne: He’s only twelve. He plays basketball for the school team. In fact, we played one-on-one together on Sunday. Guess who won.

Zoe: It wasn’t you.

Wayne: Right. Anyway, it was good exercise for me, though. I really needed it.

Zoe: Sounds like you had a good time with your nephew.

Wayne: Yes, he’s a great kid.

Nancy: We have to decide the new captain of our tennis team. I was thinking about Ken. He’s the best player we’ve got, right?

Bill: Well, Ken is definitely a good player, but I prefer Tom.

Nancy: Why?

Bill: Well, Tom is just as good a player as Ken. And, on top of that, he’s a born leader. Ken is no more a leader than my pet hamster!

Nancy: Umm … You’re probably right. OK, let’s choose Tom. By the way, did you hear that Ken has bought a really expensive racket?

Bill: Yes, but his racket is not as expensive as mine. Take a look at this beauty!

Nancy: Wow! That’s the latest model.

Bill: It’s a birthday present from my parents.

Sayaka: Hello! I’m so happy to see you. I seem to have lost my way.

Jacob: Oh, really. Where do you want to go?

Sayaka: I want to get to the ropeway station. At first, I saw some signs, but I’ve not seen any for the last hour, so I’m in a bit of a panic.

Jacob: Don’t worry. I’m actually going to the ropeway station too, so I’m happy to show you the way.

Sayaka: Thank you so much. That’s really kind of you.

Jacob: There are two ways to get there. One way is tougher but quicker than the other.

Sayaka: I prefer the quicker path.

Jacob: No problem. Let’s go.

Pick-Up Phrases

One way is tougher but quicker than the other.
一方の道は別のものよりも大変ですが、はやく着けます。

Lesson 114 比較級② 指定表現を加える

Haruka: Jeffrey, why that face?

Jeffrey: Look at the price of the mangos. Mangos are much cheaper in my country than in Japan.

Haruka: I see. You are from the Philippines, right?

Jeffrey: Yes. It is much easier to get inexpensive fresh fruit there.

Haruka: Oh, by the way, have you ever eaten durian?

Jeffrey: Yes, of course.

Haruka: Do you like it?

Jeffrey: Ah, not so much. You know durian has a really strong smell, but some people like the sweet and mellow flavor.

Haruka: Interesting. I want to try durian someday.

Jeffrey: If you come to my country, you can certainly do that. And it will be much cheaper than here!

Pick-Up Phrases

Hey, look at this computer. It’s really stylish, isn’t it?

And guess what? It’s a lot cheaper, too!

guess what? は「何だと思う?」。相手に想像させることによって会話に勢いをつけます。
a lot cheaper は比較級の強調。「はるかに安い」。
