レッスンのポイント
関係代名詞による修飾のポイントは一にも二にも空所の扱いにあります。今回はもう一度この基本に立ち返ります。
Today’s dialog
英語教師のジョーンズ先生と、スピーチコンテストで優勝したアカネの母親との会話です。
Mr. Jones: Congratulations, Mrs. Ikeda. Your daughter made an excellent speech, and she deserved to win the contest.
Mrs. Ikeda: We’re all absolutely delighted, and Akane is over the moon. Thank you so much for all your help.
Mr. Jones: Actually, one of our American exchange students worked with Akane quite a lot. You see the girl with blonde hair over there? That’s the girl who helped Akane.
Mrs. Ikeda: I see. Well, thank you again, anyway. I’ll go and thank the exchange student personality.
Mr. Jones: Good idea. And you can be very proud of your daughter. She’s a brilliant student.

She deserved to win the contest.
deserve は「（報酬・罪などに）値する・ふさわしい」ということ。deserve to … は「～するに値する・～して当然だ」ということ。重要な動詞です。
We’re all absolutely delighted, and Akane is over the moon!
delighted（喜んで）は大きな喜びの表現。absolutely（まったく・100%）を伴い非常に大きな喜びを表しています。over the moon も同じ。「月の上」レベルで喜んでいます。
You can be very proud of your daughter.
be proud of は「～を誇りに思う」。日本語ではあまり言わない表現ですが、英語では頻繁に使われます。

That’s the girl who helped Akane.
この文の空所はどこにありますか？そう、helped の主語位置が空所。the girl とこの空所が組み合わされ「アカネを助けた少女」という意味になっています。
彼女はアカネが手助けをし女の子です。
That’s the girl who Akane helped.
この文では空所は helpped の目的語。the girl とこの空所が組み合わされ「アカネが助けた」と意味がまったく変わります。
では、次の問題。今度は関係代名詞 that を使って意味の違いを考えてください。
These are the students that encouraged your daughter.
These are the students that your daughter encouraged.
GRAMMAR IN ACTION ～文法の実践～
空所の位置を変えて、様々な内容を言ってみましょう。
This is the doctor that treated me so expertly.
treat は「扱う」。医師の場合は「治療する」です。この文では treated の主語位置が空所となって、doctor と結びついています。expertly は「素晴らしいスキル・知識を使って」ということ。
This is the patient that I treated so expertly.
こんな自慢げな医師は嫌ですね。
Shakespeare is a writer who has inspired so many people.
inspire のイメージは「息を吹き込む」。そこから「奮起させる・元気にする・着想を与える」など豊かな使い方が生まれています。a writer を、主語を空所にして説明していきましょう。
