レッスンのポイント
今回は if 節を使った仮定法の発展です。「（過去、事実に反して）もし～だったなら、（今頃）～だろうなぁ」の形。今まで学習した形のハイブリッドです。
Today’s dialog
アリスが友人のダンに入学試験の出来を尋ねます。
Alice: Hi, Dan. How did the entrance exam go?
Dan: Don’t ask!
Alice: That bad, huh?
Dan: Yeah, it was a disaster. I’m sure I’ve failed miserably. My parents are going to be really angry with me.
Alice: Ha ha! Why am I not surprised! If you had followed my advice, you wouldn’t be in such trouble now.
Dan: I know. You gave me great advice on how to prepare for the exam, but I kept putting off studying, so in the end I barely did any preparation.
Alice: Well, you’ll just have to study really hard and try for another university. I’ll help you if you like.
Dan: That would be wonderful. Thanks a lot, Alice.

How did the entrance exam go?
この文の how は「どのように」。go のイメージは「ある場所から出て進んでいく」。この文では「進んでいく」の使い方。「入学試験はどのように進んでいきましたか？」から「どうだった？」
You’ll just have to study really hard and try for another university.
you’ll have to は will と have to のコンビネーション。未来の事態に目をやりながら（will）「～しなければならないでしょうね」という形。よく使われます。

if を使った仮定法の発展パターンです。
このキーセンテンスは「（過去、事実に反して）もし～だったなら、（今頃）～だろうなぁ」という新しいパターン。過去の出来事の反事実のニュアンスを与えるために、バックシフトして過去完了形、そして結びの節では「今～だろうなぁ」とホンワカと would で結んでいます。
今回は「過去に対する仮定と現在の状況」を組み合わせた、ハイブリッドパターンとなっています。
いくつか例を眺めてみましょう。
If you had exercised more, you wouldn’t be overweight.
If you had organized your schedule better, you could be relaxing on a beach in Bali now!

ハイブリッドパターンの練習です。
If you had treated your girlfriend better, she would still be with you now.
過去の状況について「実際そうではなかったが」を与えるために had treated と過去形にバックシフト。今の状況についてですから結びの節は would となります。
If you hadn’t wasted your money, you could own a luxury apartment by now.
過去に対するあり得ない想定ですから、バックシフトで過去完了。「今できているはずだ」、ですから could 。
If you son had practiced much harder, he might be a top golfer now.
harder に much が強調を与えています。過去の事実に反した想定を might で結んでいます。
