レッスンのポイント
前置詞 by の意味を尋ねると大抵「～によって」という答えが返ってきます。でもそれは意味じゃなくて日本語訳。by の本当の意味はとっても簡単なんです。
Today’s dialog
タブレットを見ているスミスさんにサトウさんが話しかけます。
Sato: What are you reading on your tablet?
Smith: I’m looking for a book, but I can’t find it on the internet.
Sato: What kind of book is it?
Smith: It’s a collection of letters written by the classical music composers Brahms and Clara Schumann. They wrote hundreds of letters to each other.
Sato: Well, if you still can’t find it, there’s a great bookshop by my school. They might be able to help you.
Smith: OK. I’ll check it out on the weekend.

by のイメージは「近く・そば」です。このイメージは nearby、close by（すぐ近く）といったフレーズでも確認することができます。
受動態でおなじみの「～によって」も「近く」というイメージから。
John was attached by a dog.
by が作る面白いフレーズに「A by A」のパターンがあります。
My English is improving little by little.
It’s getting warmer day by day.

you の説明が standing by the waterfall。by はもちろん「近く・そば」。
Our drama group is sponsored by three local companies.
sponsor は「スポンサーになる・出資する」という動詞・この動詞を使って受動態とします。be sponsored という出来事の「行為者」を近くに感じて by を使います。
Follow the recipe step by step, and it should turn out fine.
step by step は「段階的に・一歩ずつ」。turn out は「～ということになる」。
