レッスンのポイント
ask は「頼む・尋ねる」を表すナンバー1動詞。ところでどうしてこの2つの使い方が ask には同居しているのでしょうか?
Today’s dialog
会社を辞めることにしたナディアのことについて同僚が話しています。
Julie: I heard that Nadia is leaving the company. That was a big surprise.
Ben: I know. I can’t imagine this place without her.
Julie: Is there going to be a farewell party?
Ben: She said she didn’t want to have one, but we have to.
Julie: I agree. She’s been such an important part of this company for so many years.
Ben: Right. Nadia is really popular, too.
Julie: OK. Let’s ask David to organize a party.
Ben: Good!

②繰り返しを避ける one
She said she didn’t want to have one, but we have to.
(1)I lost my umbrella, but luckily I found it.
(2)I lost my umbrella, but luckily I found one.
(1)の it は my umbrella が示すモノを受けています。「自分の傘をなくしたが、幸運にもそれを見つけた」。(2)の one は名詞の代わり。つまり I found umbrella と同じ意味です。「1本傘を見つけた」。

to 不定詞を使った目的語説明型の文。to 不定詞は「矢印(→)」のニュアンスです。「David が to 以下の行為に進むように ask しましょう」ということです。ask はここでは「頼む」の意味で使われています。
