今回はさらに should の繊細な語感について。

Sam: I’m sorry, Emily. I was snowed under with work all day.
Emily: But you always check your messages during your breaks. Why didn’t you today?
Sam: Emily, calm down. I’m surprised that you should feel so upset.
Emily: You said I was the only girl you’ve ever loved. But you don’t act like it.

この文の should は「感情・判断を表す語句とともに使われる should」などと呼ばれます。should を使わず単に現在形を用いた場合、「今腹を立てている」状況に驚いているだけです。ですがキーセンテンスは「君が腹を立てることになるなんて」―その状況に至るプロセスまでが含まれているのです。
