会話における「除外のフロー」の重要な働きのひとつに「話題の対象から除外する」があります。

Today’s dialog

ロッドとティアが、チアリーダーになったメアリーについて話をしています。

Rod: Tia, have you talked to Mary, the new cheerleader?

Tia: Yes, she’s very nice. We have to use a special phone app to communicate, though.

Rod: Why?

Tia: Because she has a hearing disability.

Rod: Oh, I see. Apart from that, what else do you know about her?

Tia: Well, she’s a great cheerleader.

Rod: Really?

Tia: Yes. She senses the music through vibrations. She has great dance skills, and she helps everyone with their moves.

Rod: You’ve got to introduce me to her!

現在完了形（経験用法）・同格

今度チアリーダーになったメアリーと話をしたことがありますか？
Have you talked to Mary, the new cheerleader?
 

Why?→because ～の受け答え

どうしてですか？ – 彼女は聴覚に障害があるからです。
Why? – Because she has a hearing disability.
 
デビーはケビンよりふさわしかったため、その仕事を手に入れた。
Debbie got the job because she is better qualified than Kevin.
 

ABSORB THE FLOW!～英語の流れを身につけましょう～

それ以外に、何か他に彼女のことを知っていますか？
Apart from that, what else do you know about her?
 

バンパーがへこんことを除いて、その車はほかのダメージがなかった。
Apart from a dented bumper, the car had no other damage.
 

イギリスパスポートは別にして、僕はオーストラリアのパスポートも持っているんだよ。
Aside from my British passport, I also have an Australian one.
 

意見の違いはすべてさておき、この問題の解決策を見つけましょう。
Putting aside all our differences, let’s try to find a solution to this problem.

apart from、aside from、putting aside のどれかを使って英文を作りましょう。

①経済を除いてほかにどんなトピックが議論されるのですか？
Aside from the economy, what other topics will be discussed?
 
②私はあそこの男の人を別にすれば、ここにいる全ての人を知っています。
I know everyone here apart from that guy over there.
 
③あなたの個人的な感情はさておき、誰が昇進されるべきだと思いますか。
Putting aside your personal feelings, who do you think should get promoted?
