文型の復習を一歩進めましょう。「説明ルール」との組み合わせで生まれる「リポート文」です。（Lesson 038 ～ 039 でも学習しました）

声優のカールとカヤが話しています。
Karl: I’ve been going to the recording studio every say this week.
Kaya: You’re so busy these days. I hope you’re not too tired.
Karl: Thanks. I was able to get some sleep last night. Sometimes I can’t remember which day it is.
Kaya: Do you want to drop by a cafe somewhere before the recording?
Karl: I’d love to, but I’m afraid we don’t have time right now.
Kaya: I guess you’re right. Do you mind if I get a canned coffee from a vending machine? I need something to wake me up.
Karl: Sure. I’ll get one too. It’s going to be a long day.

drop by は「立ち寄る」。drop は「ポテっと落ちる」。by は「～の近くに」。 ２つのイメージの合成で「立ち寄る」となります。イメージを知ることは句動詞理解のカギです。
I need something to wake me up.
-thing、-one/-body で終わる名詞は、後ろに説明を置く、でしたね。I need something（何か欲しい）と言い切ってから、to wake me up（私を起こしてくれる）で説明しています。

I’m afraid we don’t have time right now.
この文はリポート文。動詞句の説明を後続の節が行う「説明ルール」が作る形です。主語の思考・感情・発言をリポートします。am afraid（恐れている・残念に思う）の内容を節で展開する意識で作ります。
I think he’s a great teacher.
I promise you I’ll be home by 11 o’clock, OK?
リポート文には that 節以外の節も使えることをもう一度確認しましょう。
He asked me if I wanted to go to the BBQ.
He asked me what I wanted for my birthday.
GRAMMAR IN ACTION ～文法の実践～
リポート文の練習です。
They informed us that the flight was delayed.
informed us（私たちに知らせてくれた）の内容を that 以下が説明。
I wasn’t sure whether you would like my present or not.
wasn’t sure の内容を whether 節（～かどうか）が展開。
I wondered why they were asking us so many questions.
wondere は「～かしらと思う」。何を不思議に思ったのかを why 以降の wh 節が説明、展開。
