仮定法最後のレッスン。仮定法の文に倒置が使われるケースを学習しましょう。

マユリがチャーリーにボーイフレンドのことで相談しています。
Charlie: Hi, Mayuri. You look a bit down. Is anything wrong?
Mayuri: Hi, Charlie. It’s my boyfriend. Recently, he’s been behaving strangely.
Charlie: How do you mean?
Mayuri: Well, for example, he cancels our date at the last minute with some lame excuse. And when we do get together, he seems more interested in his cell phone than me.
Charlie: Mmm… That’s not good at all. You know, we’re I your boyfriend, I would treat you much better.
Mayuri: Oh, that’s very sweet of you to say so, Charlie.
Charlie: I mean it! So why don’t you ditch him and be my girlfriend?
Mayuri: Huh?

Recently, he’s been behaving strangely.
現在完了進行形（ずっと～している）です。過去から現在に活動が続きます。behaving, behaving, behaving…というわけです。
How do you mean?
日常よく使われる決まり文句。What do you mean? とほぼ同じように使いますが、how がある分、「どのようにしてそうなったのか」というプロセスが意識されます。

Were I your boyfriend, I would treat you much better.
be 動詞が主語の前に置かれています。この形は「主語―助動詞倒置」。
倒置を行わないバージョンはもちろん If I were your boyfriend, I would treat you much better. です。倒置は「感情の高揚」を表す形。この文も「僕が君のボーイフレンドなら」が通常の形よりも勢いよく述べられています。
すでに学習した「もし～がなければ」を示す If it were not for … / If it had not been for … も、倒置を行えば強い感情的な抑揚が与えられます。
Had it not been for the seat belt, I would have been badly injured.
ネイティブスピーカーは if がなくてもまったく意外ではありません。条件を表すのに if を使う必要は必ずしもないからです。
You ever insult me again, I’ll throw you off the team.

仮定法に倒置。非常に高度な形です。
When I your teacher, I would ban the use of cell phones in the classroom.
キーセンテンスと同じパターン。現在についての反事実の想定。ban は「禁止する」。
Were it not for the rain, we could have a BBQ outside.
If it were not for …（もし～がなかったら）の倒置バージョン。
Had it not been for my three alarm clocks, I would never have woken up!
過去の内容についての反事実の「～がなかったら」ですから、had it not been for を使えば大丈夫。結びの節も「～だっただろう」ですから、would have で結びましょう。
