under は「～の下」。簡単ですね。でもこの前置詞には変わった使い方があるのです。それは「未完成」。

Gill: Hi, Steve. Wow, you have a great tan! I guess you really enjoyed your holiday in Greece.
Steve: Yes. Overall, it was wonderful.
Gill: Overall?
Steve: Yes. I mean the weather was fantastic, the people were really friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious.
Gill: So what was the problem?
Steve: Well, the hotel didn’t tell us that there was a new wing under construction.
Gill: Oh, no! So it was very noisy?
Steve: Exactly. From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.
Gill: That’s too bad.

この文では guess（なんとなく思う・推測する・think よりも確度の低い想定を表す） の内容を you 以下の節が説明。

リポート文は「動詞句」の説明を節で行う形だということを覚えておきましょう

There was a new wing under construction.
under は「～の下」を表す前置詞ですが、この前置詞も連想によってその使い途を広げています。under の位置関係がもたらす連想のひとつに「未完成」があります。「完成のレベルに達していない」ということ。この文は「工事中」。under way（進行中）などもこの例。
I studied math under a famous professor.
She claimed she committed the crime under the influence of her husband.
次も連想が必要な例。
She wouldn’t cheat on him: she is above that.
above は「（高さが）上」。道徳的にそんなことをするレベルにはいないことを表しています。
His behavior is beyond comprehension.
beyond は「（範囲）を越えて」。理解の範囲を「越えている」のです。

The elevator will be under repair all morning.
under repair で「修理中」。「未完成」のニュアンスが生きています。
A kind co-worker took me under her wing and showed me the ropes.
take … under one’s wing は「面倒を見る・庇護する」。という意味。鳥が卵やひなを守っている様子からの連想。show … the ropes は「仕事のやり方を教える」。こちらは船を操る技術の要がロープであったところから生まれています。
My son is making great progress under the influence of his new teacher.
under the influence（影響の下）。しっかり覚えましょう。
