会話を楽しむ。そのための重要なコツが「興味を示す」。今回はこの基本的な態度について。
Today’s dialog
ミユは友人のチャーリーが女性といるところをショッピングモールで見かけたようです。
Miyu: Hi, Charlie. I saw you on Sunday.
Charlie: Oh, did you? Where did you see me?
Miyu: It was in the shopping mall. You were with a young woman.
Charlie: Was I? Are you sure it was me? I was there alone on Sunday.
Miyu: Really? I’m pretty sure it was you. You seemed to be enjoying chatting with her.
Charlie: Oh, now I remember. That was one of my English students. We bumped into each other by chance.

「あいづち疑問文」を使って、上手に「聞いていますよ」を言語化していますね。あいづち疑問文とは、日本語の「へぇ？」「そうなの？」に相当する疑問文。相手の発言を「軽い」疑問文に変えて応答します。I saw you on Sunday. を疑問文に変えて軽く Oh, did you?。
次の文では You were with a young woman.であるため、疑問文にして Was I? となります。
次の文では You were with a young woman.であるため、疑問文にして Was I? となります。
Tell me, what do you do? – I’m a doctor. – Oh, a doctor.
