Wife: In other words, you’re going to be late! What should I do? We have a reservation for the restaurant for 7:00. It’s our anniversary.

Husband: I know, but there’s no way I can be home by 7:00. Eight should be possible.

Wife: OK. I’ll change the reservation to 8:00.

Husband: Thanks, honey.

別の言い方をすれば、君の友達は、連れて行きたくないって言っているんだよ。

これは典型的な日本の婉曲表現だね。日本の人たちは嫌だと言うのを好まないんだよ。
This is a typical Japanese euphemism. Japanese people don’t like to say no.
