The town paper says the number of participants is 1.5 times as many as last year.
「A(記事など)によると」とソースを示す表現として according to A を習いましたが、この文のように A says … という言い方もできます。一般的な「~だそうだ」という場合には They say …/People say … などもよく使います。
数字+times(~倍)を使った比較の表現をマスターしましょう。大きさや規模を大まかに説明したいときに「だいたい~倍くらい…」という言い方はとても便利です。
GRAMMAR POINT 「~倍」という言い方。
「AはBの~倍だ」と言うときは、… times のあとに「as + 原級 + as …」(~と同じくらい・・・だ)、あるいは「比較級 + than 」をおきます。
China is twenty-five times as large as Japan.
「~倍」は 数字 + times で表すのが基本ですが、twice(2倍)のように特別な言い方をするものもあります。まとめて覚えましょう。
I am twice as happy as (I was) last year.
※普通 I was は省略されます
half(半分・2分の1) twice (2倍) one-third(3分の1) two-thirds(3分の2) one-quater(4分の1)
