The town paper says the number of participants is 1.5 times as many as last year.
「A（記事など）によると」とソースを示す表現として according to A を習いましたが、この文のように A says … という言い方もできます。一般的な「～だそうだ」という場合には They say …/People say … などもよく使います。
数字＋times（～倍）を使った比較の表現をマスターしましょう。大きさや規模を大まかに説明したいときに「だいたい～倍くらい…」という言い方はとても便利です。
GRAMMAR POINT 「～倍」という言い方。
「AはBの～倍だ」と言うときは、… times のあとに「as + 原級 + as …」（～と同じくらい･･･だ）、あるいは「比較級 ＋ than 」をおきます。
China is twenty-five times as large as Japan.
「～倍」は 数字 + times で表すのが基本ですが、twice（2倍）のように特別な言い方をするものもあります。まとめて覚えましょう。
I am twice as happy as (I was) last year.
※普通 I was は省略されます
half（半分・2分の1) twice （2倍） one-third（3分の1） two-thirds（3分の2） one-quater（4分の1）
CAN-DO 活用例文
They say that this sports car runs about twice as fast as compact cars.
