Lesson 169 There’s someone in Tokyo I want to give the soup to
Naoki: I hope it’s not too cold with the window open.
Yoko: Not at all! The wind feels great. By the way, what’s this cooler for?
Sho: It’s for Grandpa’s special soup. I made some. I also brought spoons and bowls, so all I need to do is to heat it up. There’s someone in Tokyo I want to give the soup to.
Yoko: Mari will appreciate it.
Sho: And someone else.
Yoko: Did you say something? I couldn’t hear you because of the wind.
Sho: Nothing.
Yoko: I have never thought about bringing special soup over. I’m looking forward to having it with everyone!
Lesson 169 Summary
Naoki, Yoko, and Sho drove to Tokyo.
Sho made some of his grandfather’s special soup.
Yoko said, “I have never thougt about bringing special soup over. I’m looking forward to having it with everyone!”
Lesson 170 Perfect timing, Dad!
Mari: Thank you so much for coming! Where’s Dad?
Sho: He’s parking the car.
Yoko: I’m sorry I couldn’t come to the opening.
Mari: That’s OK. You’re a busy person. I’m just glad you’re here. Sho, I got a call from David that he and his editor are on their way.
Yoko: David’s coming, too? My, my.
Sho: It’s been years since the whole family got together.
Yoko: The whole family?
Naoki: Sorry. It took forever to find a parking spot.
Mari: Perfect timing, Dad! Sho, what’s in the cooler?
Sho: I made some of Grandpa’s special soup. Is there a place to heat it up?
Mari: I’ll ask the gallery staff.
Lesson 170 Summary
Sho, Naoki, and Yoko were at Mari’s group exhibition.
Mari said David and his editor were on their way.
Naoki entered the gallery and said, “It took forever to find a parking spot.”
Lesson 171 I drew our family portrait
Mari: I drew our family portrait. We’re looking at the cherry blossom of Sakurayama from the second floor of the ryokan.
Yoko: I’ve never actually seen your paintings before, Mari.
Mari: Well, you were against my goal of becoming an artist.
Yoko: Not really. I was just hoping you’d have a different goal.
Sho: What’s that?
Mari: Taking over the ryokan, Sho.
Gallery Staff: Mari, the soup is ready. Also, you have some new visitors.
Mari: OK, everyone, please look at the artwork.
Yoko: Watching this makes me feel calm.
Mari: Grandma, I’d like you meet someone. She bought me my paint set. I’d like her to have Grandpa’s special soup with us.
Yoko: Yumi?
Yumi: Mom, I’m very sorry for everything.
Lesson 171 Summary
Yoko had never seen Mari’s paintings before.
Mari said, “You were against my goal of becoming an artist.”
Yumi also attended the exhibition .
She said to Yoko, “Mom, I’m very sorry for everything.”
Lesson 172 You don’t have to worry about the ryokan
Yoko: I guess I’m the only one who didn’t know Yumi would be here. And that she and David already knew each other.
Naoki: Sorry, Yoko. I….
Yoko: I understand. I knew I had to speak with Yumi eventually. I’m thinking of changing my attitude. What about you, Yumi?
Yumi: Yes, me too.
Yoko: Where’s Sho?
Naoki: He want to explore Tokyo with Mari and David.
Yoko: I wanted them to hear this, too. You don’t have to worry about the ryokan. I’ve thought of a better way to keep it open.
Yumi: What’s that?
Yoko: You don’t need to know. Yumi, please return whenever you can. I need someone I can really argue with.

Yoko knew she had to speak with Yumi eventually.

She also told Yumi she didn’t have to worry about the ryokan.
