Today’s dialog
Melanie: Why do you keep checking your phone? We’re having dinner together.
Isaac: I’m just checking my messages.
Melanie: My parents never let me use my phone at the dinner table.
Isaac: Really? Your parents are too strict. My parents don’t mind me using my phone at dinner.
Melanie: That’s unbelievable. My parents would get so mad. They always say dinner is a time to talk with each other as a family.
Isaac: They have a good point, but my friends always send me messages even during dinner time.
Melanie: Why don’t you just reply later?
Isaac: They expect me to reply quickly.
Melanie: I disagree with that attitude.

For Deeper Understanding ~
My parents don’t mind me using my phone at dinner.
REAL GRAMMAR FOR COMMUNICATION~
My parents never let me use my phone at the dinner table.
let は「~させる」なので、「me=use my phone〔させる〕」となりますが、let は「許す」。
What made you change your mind?
I’ll have my assistant book a hotel for you.
GRAMMAR IN ACTION ~
My parents let me wear whatever clothes I like.
let が作る目的語説明型。whatever は「何でも」。whatever clothes I like は what I like(私が好きなこと)と同じ形。「私が好きな服は何でも」です。
My teacher made us apologize to the whole class.
I’ll have one of our mechanics check the tire balance.
CHECK THE POINT ~
Tony always makes me laugh with a joke.
