Alexis: So, how do you like my new hairstyle, Caspar?
Caspar: I like it. It’s natural.
Alexis: Natural? I spent a lot of money to get it styled this way. And it’s only “natural?”
Caspar: I meant it as a compliment, Alexis. I’m not criticizing.
Alexis: Can’t you think of a better word, such as “elegant” or “chic,” or “trendy?” I don’t need to go to a stylist to have a “natural” look.
Caspar: What I meant was it’s the most natural look for you. The best!
Alexis: Hmmm.

自分の意見を誤解なく相手に伝えることは、会話の基本です。もし相手が誤解しているように感じたなら、こうしたフレーズを使って相手に正確な理解をうながしましょう。ここでは What I meant という wh 節が主語になっています。「私が何を伝えようと思ったのかは」、「私が伝えようと思ったことは」両用の形です。

cultural awareness は「文化（的）意識」。
