Lesson 151 感情を表す形容詞①

教師のベニー・ジェッツ先生とスミス先生がデスパレート・ラッツのコンサートに行ってきたようです。

Mr. Smith: Bennie, wasn’t that concert on Saturday great?

Ms. Jetz: Honestly, Mr. Smith, it was a little disappointing.

Mr. Smith: Really? Why?

Ms. Jetz: Well, I always enjoy their classic hits, but their new songs are rather boring. And Bill Bungalow’s jokes in between the songs were annoying.

Mr. Smith: You have a point. I didn’t find them funny at all.

Ms. Jetz: The Desperate Rats should just play music and not talk so much.

Mr. Smith: I agree.

Lesson 152 感情を表す形容詞②

新婚夫婦のケリーとタクマが、アパートで結婚式の写真を眺めています。

Takuma: Kelly, look at this picture of your parents. They look so happy.

Kelly: Yes, I think they were relieved more than anything else.

Takuma: We almost didn’t have the wedding.

Kelly: It wasn’t perfect. I was disappointed with the food.

Takuma: I didn’t have time to eat. Some guests were bored by the speeches.

Kelly: Yes, my Uncle Barry went on and on.

Takuma: Well, he is a famous talk show host.

Kelly: True. People seemed excited to learn that Barry King is my uncle.

シホとダグが、ダグの故郷のテキサスで買い物をしています。

Doug: So, Shiho. How did you like the Texas barbecue?

Shiho: It was OK, I guess.

Doug: Just OK? We had real T-bone steak.

Shiho: The taste was fine, but it was too tough. My jaw is sore.

Doug: Well, I think that’s what a real steak should be so like. Anyway, tonight we’re having tacos.

Shiho: Chicken tacos sound great. We need avocados, right?

Doug: Of course, for the guacamole. These are still too hard. Let’s look for some softer ones.

Shiho: OK.

Lesson 154 形容詞もイメージで②: 豊かな表現力

エモリさんとシンディは奈良の法隆寺近くで柿を食べています。

Mr. Emori: Cindy, what do you call this fruit in English?

Cindy: It’s a persimmon.

Mr. Emori: There is a haiku about persimmons by the poet Masaoka Shiki.

Cindy: Well, persimmons are autumn fruits. And I know that seasonal expressions are essential for haiku.

Mr. Emori: Exactly. He wrote, “Eat a persimmon, a bell rings at Horyuji.”

Cindy: Oh, we’re near that temple. Let’s take a bite and see what happens. Hmm. I don’t hear a bell.

Mr. Emori: Maybe it depends on the time of day.

Cindy: Right!
