The Met Museum to exhibit Japanese bamboo art

　The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or The Met, in New York has held a preview of an exhibition of Japanese bamboo art.

　The special exhibition showcases more than 90 items, including everyday utensils, flower baskets and contemporary artworks.

　Among them is a monumental sculpture entitled “The Gate,” designed to represent a fusion between Japan and the United States.

　Bamboo art developed from the practice of making baskets for daily use. Met officials say that little was known in the US about the high quality of Japanese bamboo art until recently. Monika Bincsik, an assistant curator at the Met, says that she wants people to know how basketry in Japan developed into a form of art, and how remarkably creative the artists are.

　The exhibition runs until February 4, 2018.

メトロポリタン美術館で日本の竹工芸展開催

ニューヨークにあるメトロポリタン美術館（略称ザ・メット）で、日本の竹工芸展示会の内覧会が行われました。

この特別展では日用品として使われる道具や花篭、そして現代の芸術作品まで、90点あまりが展示されています。

このうちの The Gate という題名の巨大な彫刻は、日本とアメリカの融合を実現するために作られました。

竹工芸は日用品の篭細工製作業務から発展しました。ザ・メットの関係者によると、あめりかでは、最近まで、日本の竹工芸の質の高さはほとんど知られておらず、同館の学芸員のモニカ・ビンチクさんは、日本の篭細工が芸術に発展した様子や、作家たちの想像力の素晴らしさを知ってもらいたい、と話しています。

展示会は2018年2月4日まで続きます。
