Ratio of unmarried people rises in Japan

　A survey in Japan shows record-high ratios of 50-year-old men and women have never been married. It says about one in four men and about one in seven women remain single.

　The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research says that, as of October 1, 2015, 23.3 percent of the 50-year-old men and 14 percent of the 50-year-old women stayed single.

　Both are the highest since the census began in 1920.

　By prefecture, Okinawa had the highest ratio of unmarried men at 26.2 percent, while Nara recorded the lowest at 18.2 percent.

　Tokyo had the highest proportion of unmarried women at 19.2 percent, while Fukui logged the lowest at 8.6 percent.

　The institute says the number of single Japanese people will likely rise for the time being, as another survey shows more and more young people have no intention of tying the knot in the future.

日本のある調査で、50歳の男女で結婚の経験のない男女の割合が過去最高であることがわかりました。それによると男性はおよそ4人に一人、女性はおよそ7人に1人が独身のままです。

国立社会保障・人口問題研究所によると、2015年10月1日の時点で50歳男性の23.3％、50歳女性の14％が独身を続けていました。

両者ともに1920年に国勢調査が始まって以降の最高値です。

都道府県別では、独身男性の比率が最も高かったのは沖縄で26.2％、一方、最も低かったのが奈良で18.2％でした。

女性の未婚率は、東京が19.2％と最も高く、最も低い福井は8.6％でした。

同研究所は、別の調査で、一生結婚するつもりがない若者がますます増えているという結果が出ていることから、当面は独身の日本人の数が増え続けるとしています。
