カフェでリサ（L）が友人のマーク（M)と話をしています。リサはイタリアの料理学校へ行くため、イタリア語を学んでいますが・・・

An Encouraging Friend

L: (Sighing.) Mark, I’ve been studying Italian for four hours a day.

M: That’s terrific, Lisa! At the rate you’re going, you’ll be fluent soon!

L: Do you think so?

M: Oh, yes. It’s just a matter of time! Say something in Italian.

L: Non parlo Italiano, Marco.

M: That’s just amazing! What does it mean?

L: “I don’t speak Italian, Mark.”

M: Wow! Your accent sounds really natural.

L: Thanks. I’ve been working on it.

励ましてくれる友

L：（ため息をついて）マーク、私はイタリア語を1日4時間勉強してきてるのよ。

M：それ、すごいよ、リサ！ その調子だと、じきに流暢に話せるよ！

L：そう思う？

M：そうとも。 単に時間の問題さ！ イタリア語で何か言ってみて。

L：Non parlo Italiano, Marco.

M：それ、ほんとに素晴らしい！ どういう意味？

L：「イタリア語は話せないの、マーク」

M：ワオ！ 口調がとても自然に聞こえる。

L：ありがとう。 ずっと練習しているの。

ここでの rate は「速度・進度」を表し、 at the rate you’re going は「あなたの進んでいる速度で、その調子で行けば」という意味になります。
