修飾節の中で先行詞が副詞の役割をする「関係副詞」。今回は when、why を学びます。
Today’s dialog
ネルソンがユリカに新年の食事のお礼を言います。
Yurika: Hi, Nelson. Welcome back. I bet your family was very glad to see you, even though it was such a short trip after the New Year.
Nelson: Yeah, it was a bit of a rush, but my mom was so happy I could be there to celebrate her 60th birthday. By the way, thank you again for inviting me to your family’s New Year’s brunch.
Yurika: You don’t have a special meal on New Year’s Day in the UK, do you?
Nelson: That’s right. New Year’s Eve is the big event over there.
Yurika: Oh, that’s quite different from Japan. New Year’s Day is the day when the whole family gets together.

「関係副詞」のマスターは、先行詞を後続の節で「副詞」として意識できるかどうかにかかっています。
この文で関係副詞 when は、先行詞 the day が後続の文で the whole family gets together on the day.（その日に家族全員が集まる）と副詞の働きをすることを指定しています。先行詞 the day と時を表す空所が組み合わされ「家族全員が集まる日」となります。
もうひとつ見てみましょう。

次は関係副詞 why の例です。

the reason why は定番表現です。

ungrammatical は「文法上間違っている」。the reason why はまとめてすぐに口から出せるように。
Do you remember the time when we don’t have any money?
Do you remember the time（そのときのことを覚えているかい？）までは一気に。the time は後から説明。when でつなぎます。didn’t have any money は「まったくお金がなかった」。
The only time that I’ve felt really scared was during the last typhoon.
「～のとき（時間）」は the only time。during は「～の間」。
