ナメクジの侵略って・・・
今日のラジオ英会話のお題です。

ナメクジ＝slug　ということらしいです。
こういう表現は､現地にでも住んでいないと憶えない表現ですよね。
日本人と英語を話す人が、日本の地で「ナメクジ」の話題をすることはあまり考えられないから、そういう意味ではラジオ英会話を習っている価値がある、とも言えますね(^^;

The Slug Invasion

J: We can enjoy homegrown lettuce this summer.

M: John, your seedlings don’t look healthy. Where did you buy them?

J: At Nellie’s Garden Center.

M: Something is eating the leaves.

J: Aha! I found the culprits. We have slugs!

M: There are so many!

J: Let’s catch them and put them in the compost pile.

M: I’m not touching them!

J: Okay. Leo can help me. Leo!

○ pest　害虫、害獣

○ slug　ナメクジ

○ invasion　侵略、侵攻

○ homegrown　自宅で作った、自家製の

○ seedling　苗、苗木

○ Aha!　いた（いた）！見つけた！そうか！

○ culprit　犯人

○ I’m not touching them!　私は触りませんよ！［このI’m not …ing.は否定的な決意を表す］

○ Leo can help me.　リオが手伝ってくれる。［このcanは厚意を表す］

Something is eating the leaves.
葉が何かに食われています。

はっきりしないことを伝える表現。
「正体がわからないもの」を something で表現します。
ここでは受け身で訳されていますが、something は通常主語として使います。

★: 私のトマトの木が何かおかしいんです。
★: Something is wrong with my tomato plants.

☆: 水やりはどのくらいの頻度で？
☆: How often do you water them?

★: 毎日です。
★: Every day.

☆: 多分それは多すぎます。
☆: Maybe that’s too much.

犯人（たち）を見つけました。

culpritsのcul　は「カル」ではなく
“cuw”の様な音にすると言いやすい。
